Narrative:
While descending from 7000' to 6000' while on radar vectors from ny approach control for an approach to ewr runway 22L, I glanced out the left window and saw a light single engine aircraft pass below and behind me (from my 1 O'clock to 7 O'clock position). Almost simultaneously, approach control called 'traffic 12 O'clock less than a mi, altitude unk'. We never saw him till he was passing us and I don't believe he ever saw us. Our altitude was approximately 6700' descending and I would guess him to have been 6500'.

Title: NMAC BETWEEN REPORTER LGT AND UNIDENTIFIED VFR TRAFFIC.
Narrative: WHILE DESCENDING FROM 7000' TO 6000' WHILE ON RADAR VECTORS FROM NY APCH CTL FOR AN APCH TO EWR RWY 22L, I GLANCED OUT THE LEFT WINDOW AND SAW A LIGHT SINGLE ENGINE ACFT PASS BELOW AND BEHIND ME (FROM MY 1 O'CLOCK TO 7 O'CLOCK POSITION). ALMOST SIMULTANEOUSLY, APCH CTL CALLED 'TFC 12 O'CLOCK LESS THAN A MI, ALT UNK'. WE NEVER SAW HIM TILL HE WAS PASSING US AND I DON'T BELIEVE HE EVER SAW US. OUR ALT WAS APPROX 6700' DESCENDING AND I WOULD GUESS HIM TO HAVE BEEN 6500'.
