Narrative:
Aircraft was on IFR training flight from akron/canton regional airport to lima/allen county, oh. We were in IMC in cruise 6000 MSL. Aircraft developed an unusual vibration and lost power. We began descending and requested a heading to the nearest airport. Leaving 3000', engine failed totally. We continued our descent in VMC, selected a wheat field and landed. No further damage, no injuries. Investigation showed massive internal failure of crankshaft, connecting rods, cylinder, and push rods. Descent and landing was accomplished without amended clearance or emergency declaration.
