Narrative:

Our flight was cruising at its assigned altitude of FL320. We requested through hnl commercial radio, FL340, and turned off volume on HF, and were standing by for SELCAL on HF. Hnl commercial radio attempted contact thru HF SELCAL to inform us that our requested altitude was approved by ATC. We did not receive SELCAL transmission. Hnl commercial radio tried to contact us on VHF through relay from another aircraft in vicinity, however, VHF volume was inadvertently turned too low to hear transmission. We were out of communication with hnl for approximately 1 hour.
