Narrative:
While resolving a maintenance write up with first officer with captain flying at FL240, contacted by ATC with clearance to 12,000. I let maintenance write up situation side track action to descend to 12,000. 4 to 5 mins later ATC asked altitude and told to descend a good rate/expedited descent to 12,000. Observed no conflicting traffic during descent nor was advised of same by ATC.
