Narrative:

While my student and I entered the pattern at new smyrna beach airport at 800' an small aircraft xy was downwind for runway 29. My student was entering the pattern in the wrong direction. He was entering right downwind. I noticed the problem and had the student break off when we heard the xy call downwind 29. We decided not to turn left because of an impending hazard with the xy. So we turned downwind then we heard the xy call base, we looked out our right window and saw the xy turning right for us. I then made a climbing right hand turn to avoid the xy. He passed 200' right below us. We re-entered the pattern without further incident.
