Narrative:
I was the captain on an medium large transport taxiing from the gate at charlotte, nc. It was the origination of a trip series with a new copilot. I had already had a problem with his ability to get a clearance read the checklist etc. After contacting ramp control (company) to get clearance to taxi to predetermined spots, they told us to taxi to spot 7 for runway 36R (short runway). I told them we needed runway 36L (long runway) for weight. They told us to taxi to spot 5 and contact ground control (FAA). Upon reaching spot 5 we contacted ground control and informed them we needed runway 36L. He then asked us if we needed it for weight to which the copilot replied yes. At this point I continued taxiing to 36L. The controller then asked us again if we needed 36L for weight at which point I (somewhat irritated) informed him that 'I would not have asked for it if I hadn't needed it, but it doesn't matter anyway because I want it and I have already told you once that we needed it for weight'. He was very nice and explained that he was just told that he had to task. We continued taxiing to 36L and I do not believe we mad a taxi clearance but the frequency was clear so he could have told us at anytime to stop or given us a clearance. There was no conflict and no problem. I later (3-4 hours) (when I had time) called from another city and talked to the controller and his supervisor and apologized for being a (at the lack of a better term) horse's ass. They said there was no problem and they very much appreciated the call.

Title: TAXI WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: I WAS THE CAPT ON AN MLG TAXIING FROM THE GATE AT CHARLOTTE, NC. IT WAS THE ORIGINATION OF A TRIP SERIES WITH A NEW COPLT. I HAD ALREADY HAD A PROBLEM WITH HIS ABILITY TO GET A CLRNC READ THE CHECKLIST ETC. AFTER CONTACTING RAMP CTL (COMPANY) TO GET CLRNC TO TAXI TO PREDETERMINED SPOTS, THEY TOLD US TO TAXI TO SPOT 7 FOR RWY 36R (SHORT RWY). I TOLD THEM WE NEEDED RWY 36L (LONG RWY) FOR WEIGHT. THEY TOLD US TO TAXI TO SPOT 5 AND CONTACT GND CTL (FAA). UPON REACHING SPOT 5 WE CONTACTED GND CTL AND INFORMED THEM WE NEEDED RWY 36L. HE THEN ASKED US IF WE NEEDED IT FOR WEIGHT TO WHICH THE COPLT REPLIED YES. AT THIS POINT I CONTINUED TAXIING TO 36L. THE CTLR THEN ASKED US AGAIN IF WE NEEDED 36L FOR WEIGHT AT WHICH POINT I (SOMEWHAT IRRITATED) INFORMED HIM THAT 'I WOULD NOT HAVE ASKED FOR IT IF I HADN'T NEEDED IT, BUT IT DOESN'T MATTER ANYWAY BECAUSE I WANT IT AND I HAVE ALREADY TOLD YOU ONCE THAT WE NEEDED IT FOR WEIGHT'. HE WAS VERY NICE AND EXPLAINED THAT HE WAS JUST TOLD THAT HE HAD TO TASK. WE CONTINUED TAXIING TO 36L AND I DO NOT BELIEVE WE MAD A TAXI CLRNC BUT THE FREQ WAS CLEAR SO HE COULD HAVE TOLD US AT ANYTIME TO STOP OR GIVEN US A CLRNC. THERE WAS NO CONFLICT AND NO PROBLEM. I LATER (3-4 HRS) (WHEN I HAD TIME) CALLED FROM ANOTHER CITY AND TALKED TO THE CTLR AND HIS SUPVR AND APOLOGIZED FOR BEING A (AT THE LACK OF A BETTER TERM) HORSE'S ASS. THEY SAID THERE WAS NO PROBLEM AND THEY VERY MUCH APPRECIATED THE CALL.
