Narrative:

During reduced visibility I was on a left downwind leg for runway 24, I understood from the tower that an medium large transport was off my right wing. At that time I did not see the traffic so I continued downwind for a few minutes. I then turned my base turn, thinking I was clear of the traffic and not wanting to lose sight of the runway. At that time I saw the medium large transport and climbed with full power. I feel that this situation could have been avoided by: 1) not flying in reduced visibility conditions. 2) asking for help from the tower to identify my traffic position, and or call my base turn to avoid traffic. 3) identifying myself as a student pilot to the tower before departure.
