Narrative:
After level off at 10,000' on departure, we received a climb clearance to 17,000'. We questioned the altitude since arrival traffic was above us at 11,000'. The controller confirmed clearance to 17,000'. Upon leaving 10,000' controller issued an immediate right turn to avoid arrival traffic at 11,000'. Traffic was sighted moving right to left. We were unsure of the distance which separated our aircraft from the arrival traffic.
