Narrative:
Right engine fire light came on. Throttle retarded and engine shut down. Advised departure of shut down and requested landing morristown (no fire in flight or evident on ground). Long runway at morristown closed so elected return to teterboro as best choice. Ewr approach suggested an emergency clearance to expedite because of traffic in area. No passenger, positioning flight only, 4 hours fuel. No follow-up report was asked for. The small transport has photo electric cells or light sensitive fire detection system. I was climbing into the sun and this was probably the cause. Detection system replaced. I found all concerned from departure control, tower at teterboro and emergency crew to be very accommodating and helpful. I don't feel the FAA (if they inquired) would ever be satisfied with any action a pilot took, so therefore, this report. Too bad this bad feeling is out there.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ENGINE SHUTDOWN DUE TO FIRE WARNING. RETURN LAND TEB.
Narrative: RIGHT ENGINE FIRE LIGHT CAME ON. THROTTLE RETARDED AND ENGINE SHUT DOWN. ADVISED DEP OF SHUT DOWN AND REQUESTED LNDG MORRISTOWN (NO FIRE IN FLT OR EVIDENT ON GND). LONG RWY AT MORRISTOWN CLOSED SO ELECTED RETURN TO TETERBORO AS BEST CHOICE. EWR APCH SUGGESTED AN EMER CLRNC TO EXPEDITE BECAUSE OF TFC IN AREA. NO PAX, POSITIONING FLT ONLY, 4 HRS FUEL. NO FOLLOW-UP REPORT WAS ASKED FOR. THE SMT HAS PHOTO ELECTRIC CELLS OR LIGHT SENSITIVE FIRE DETECTION SYSTEM. I WAS CLIMBING INTO THE SUN AND THIS WAS PROBABLY THE CAUSE. DETECTION SYSTEM REPLACED. I FOUND ALL CONCERNED FROM DEP CTL, TWR AT TETERBORO AND EMER CREW TO BE VERY ACCOMMODATING AND HELPFUL. I DON'T FEEL THE FAA (IF THEY INQUIRED) WOULD EVER BE SATISFIED WITH ANY ACTION A PLT TOOK, SO THEREFORE, THIS REPORT. TOO BAD THIS BAD FEELING IS OUT THERE.
