Narrative:

On a SID departure out of sna, our small transport was handed off to coast approach. According to the controller the assigned altitude was 5000' MSL. When that was brought to our attention we were close to 6000. We had flown through our 5000' assigned altitude which was programmed into our flight director. A '1000' to go' call was made at 4000' but climbing at 2500 FPM we did not monitor the altitude capture function which failed. Monitoring of that function has now been implemented into our climb checklist.
