Narrative:
Level at 10,000' on an IFR flight plan we were given climb clearance by ZOB to 16,000. I removed my head set to untangle from shoulder harness first officer not realizing I had removed my headset acknowledged a climb restriction given by ATC of 13,000 thru 13,800. We were asked by ATC our assigned altitude which caused some disquiet in the cockpit as we had 2 answers, and mine was wrong. Classic uncoordinated crew -- altitude alerter goes in next week.
