Narrative:
During climb to assigned altitude of FL230, after takeoff from tlh to clt and climbing through FL200, heading 060 degrees at 310 KTS, the captain caught a glimpse of a high-speed moving object at 1 O'clock, very near, moving right to left, opp direction. In the blink of an eye, the object (a military fgt), appeared below the left side window, having passed directly under the cockpit, very close, and continued off to our left on approximately 300 degree heading, diverging. The entire sighting lasted not over 2 seconds, and was so brief that it was impossible to judge vertical sep--but the jet appeared very close. Simultaneous with this sighting, ATC reported a flight of 2 fgt's at 11 O'clock and 1 mi, at FL190. The captain responded, 'it's a good thing we're through 200.' we could just as easily have been at FL190 in our climb. It's unknown whether either fgt took evasive action, and the second fgt was never seen. The sector ATC frequency was 124.60, valdosta approach control.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR CAME IN CLOSE PROX TO OPPOSITE DIRECTION FGT'S BELOW.
Narrative: DURING CLB TO ASSIGNED ALT OF FL230, AFTER TKOF FROM TLH TO CLT AND CLBING THROUGH FL200, HDG 060 DEGS AT 310 KTS, THE CAPT CAUGHT A GLIMPSE OF A HIGH-SPD MOVING OBJECT AT 1 O'CLOCK, VERY NEAR, MOVING RIGHT TO LEFT, OPP DIRECTION. IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE, THE OBJECT (A MIL FGT), APPEARED BELOW THE LEFT SIDE WINDOW, HAVING PASSED DIRECTLY UNDER THE COCKPIT, VERY CLOSE, AND CONTINUED OFF TO OUR LEFT ON APPROX 300 DEG HDG, DIVERGING. THE ENTIRE SIGHTING LASTED NOT OVER 2 SECS, AND WAS SO BRIEF THAT IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE TO JUDGE VERT SEP--BUT THE JET APPEARED VERY CLOSE. SIMULTANEOUS WITH THIS SIGHTING, ATC RPTED A FLT OF 2 FGT'S AT 11 O'CLOCK AND 1 MI, AT FL190. THE CAPT RESPONDED, 'IT'S A GOOD THING WE'RE THROUGH 200.' WE COULD JUST AS EASILY HAVE BEEN AT FL190 IN OUR CLB. IT'S UNKNOWN WHETHER EITHER FGT TOOK EVASIVE ACTION, AND THE SECOND FGT WAS NEVER SEEN. THE SECTOR ATC FREQ WAS 124.60, VALDOSTA APCH CTL.
