Narrative:
We were completing a 6-MONTH instruction check. Had just landed on runway 31. I needed to do a 0 degree flap landing with the trnee on roll-out. I asked tower if we could go to the end of runway, turn around and take off with left closed traffic for a full stop on runway 13. Tower repeated what I said and said to continue to end of runway, do a 180 degree turn and 'cleared for takeoff.' after takeoff, while on downwind, tower told us to get a takeoff clearance next time we departed. After landing, called tower and asked to pull the tape. He said he didn't need to because he was right, but would forget about it. I am an aircraft examiner and the pilot taking the check ride was a former FAA inspector and ATC tower controller.

Title: ACFT DEP WITHOUT A CLRNC FROM TWR.
Narrative: WE WERE COMPLETING A 6-MONTH INSTRUCTION CHECK. HAD JUST LANDED ON RWY 31. I NEEDED TO DO A 0 DEG FLAP LNDG WITH THE TRNEE ON ROLL-OUT. I ASKED TWR IF WE COULD GO TO THE END OF RWY, TURN AROUND AND TAKE OFF WITH LEFT CLOSED TFC FOR A FULL STOP ON RWY 13. TWR REPEATED WHAT I SAID AND SAID TO CONTINUE TO END OF RWY, DO A 180 DEG TURN AND 'CLRED FOR TKOF.' AFTER TKOF, WHILE ON DOWNWIND, TWR TOLD US TO GET A TKOF CLRNC NEXT TIME WE DEPARTED. AFTER LNDG, CALLED TWR AND ASKED TO PULL THE TAPE. HE SAID HE DIDN'T NEED TO BECAUSE HE WAS RIGHT, BUT WOULD FORGET ABOUT IT. I AM AN ACFT EXAMINER AND THE PLT TAKING THE CHK RIDE WAS A FORMER FAA INSPECTOR AND ATC TWR CTLR.
