Narrative:
I leveled off at 10000' MSL, heading 260 degrees, to intercept the 274 degree right outbnd from dfw. I had autothrottles on and VNAV selected. The aircraft was trimmed and altitude armed on FGS. VNAV level was enunciated. I placed autoplt on and in accordance with FAA policy began to program LNAV to intercept the route segment. The aircraft began a climb to 10400' before I noticed it and returned to 10000'. I disconnected the autoplt and attempted the sequence again. The aircraft would not hold altitude and at this time the airspeed began increasing. The system was written up. I think that the FAA's policy of requiring the PF to program the computer (FMS) while on autoplt is ridiculous. The PF should direct any actions he wishes as part of technique.
