Narrative:
Flight was dispatched den to bur with right wing/body overheat system inoperative. The right side of pneumatic system was deactivated but continuously flickering caution lights associated with system were very distracting. Approaching the pmd VOR we received a clearance from lax center to descend from FL240 to 14000'. I initiated a v-nav descent predicated on crossing janny intersection at 8000' per the lynxx 5 arrival to burbank. Shortly after the clearance was amended to cross 10 mi east of pmd at 14000' while at previous descent rate, I created a waypoint of 10 west of pmd. I immediately realized my error and attempted to put in corrected waypoint and restrictions. My first officer, new on aircraft, took over on the CDU and in trying to oversee her attempts to get the wpt inserted I did not get the aircraft on the proper descent profile, resulting in crossing 10 east of pmd 1500'-2000' high. The primary factor I feel was not flying the aircraft instead of attempting to program and/or supervise the first officer. A contributing factor was the constant distraction of the caution light system. Supplemental information from acn 139396. We did not make the crossing restriction and did not notify the controller that we were unable until he brought it up. Caution: do not be distracted by FMC!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR ADVANCED COCKPIT MLG CROSSING RESTRICTION NOT MET.
Narrative: FLT WAS DISPATCHED DEN TO BUR WITH R WING/BODY OVERHEAT SYS INOP. THE R SIDE OF PNEUMATIC SYS WAS DEACTIVATED BUT CONTINUOUSLY FLICKERING CAUTION LIGHTS ASSOCIATED WITH SYS WERE VERY DISTRACTING. APCHING THE PMD VOR WE RECEIVED A CLRNC FROM LAX CENTER TO DSND FROM FL240 TO 14000'. I INITIATED A V-NAV DSCNT PREDICATED ON XING JANNY INTXN AT 8000' PER THE LYNXX 5 ARR TO BURBANK. SHORTLY AFTER THE CLRNC WAS AMENDED TO CROSS 10 MI E OF PMD AT 14000' WHILE AT PREVIOUS DSCNT RATE, I CREATED A WAYPOINT OF 10 W OF PMD. I IMMEDIATELY REALIZED MY ERROR AND ATTEMPTED TO PUT IN CORRECTED WAYPOINT AND RESTRICTIONS. MY F/O, NEW ON ACFT, TOOK OVER ON THE CDU AND IN TRYING TO OVERSEE HER ATTEMPTS TO GET THE WPT INSERTED I DID NOT GET THE ACFT ON THE PROPER DSCNT PROFILE, RESULTING IN XING 10 E OF PMD 1500'-2000' HIGH. THE PRIMARY FACTOR I FEEL WAS NOT FLYING THE ACFT INSTEAD OF ATTEMPTING TO PROGRAM AND/OR SUPERVISE THE F/O. A CONTRIBUTING FACTOR WAS THE CONSTANT DISTR OF THE CAUTION LIGHT SYS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 139396. WE DID NOT MAKE THE XING RESTRICTION AND DID NOT NOTIFY THE CTLR THAT WE WERE UNABLE UNTIL HE BROUGHT IT UP. CAUTION: DO NOT BE DISTRACTED BY FMC!
