Narrative:
Flying from monterey field west 280 degrees to coast, we turned north toward lax TCA at 1900' MSL. Chart was marked '125/48' at montgomery, '25/15 + 125/68' over ocean with dotted line indicating area west of miramar NAS. '25/15' partially obscured by mbz VOR markings. PIC saw '125/68' and proceeded at 1900-2000' MSL through airspace. San approach control followed aircraft to lax TCA and got identify from radio communications. Upon landing at santa monica, PIC was instructed to call san approach, which he did to be informed that near miss had occurred at miramar and navy jet had been forced to veer 30 degrees right and 300' low to miss the GA aircraft. PIC of GA aircraft never saw the jet. Altitude and horizontal miss estimates provided by pilot of navy, etc. Action suggested by pilot reporting here: chart markings unclear; perhaps label airspace as 'bi-level' and make sure printing and positions are clear. Pilot was from out of state.

Title: SMA PLT MISREADS CHART AND PENETRATES SURFACE AREA OF TCA. NMAC WITH MIL TRAFFIC.
Narrative: FLYING FROM MONTEREY FIELD W 280 DEGS TO COAST, WE TURNED N TOWARD LAX TCA AT 1900' MSL. CHART WAS MARKED '125/48' AT MONTGOMERY, '25/15 + 125/68' OVER OCEAN WITH DOTTED LINE INDICATING AREA W OF MIRAMAR NAS. '25/15' PARTIALLY OBSCURED BY MBZ VOR MARKINGS. PIC SAW '125/68' AND PROCEEDED AT 1900-2000' MSL THROUGH AIRSPACE. SAN APCH CTL FOLLOWED ACFT TO LAX TCA AND GOT IDENT FROM RADIO COMS. UPON LNDG AT SANTA MONICA, PIC WAS INSTRUCTED TO CALL SAN APCH, WHICH HE DID TO BE INFORMED THAT NEAR MISS HAD OCCURRED AT MIRAMAR AND NAVY JET HAD BEEN FORCED TO VEER 30 DEGS RIGHT AND 300' LOW TO MISS THE GA ACFT. PIC OF GA ACFT NEVER SAW THE JET. ALT AND HORIZ MISS ESTIMATES PROVIDED BY PLT OF NAVY, ETC. ACTION SUGGESTED BY PLT RPTING HERE: CHART MARKINGS UNCLEAR; PERHAPS LABEL AIRSPACE AS 'BI-LEVEL' AND MAKE SURE PRINTING AND POSITIONS ARE CLEAR. PLT WAS FROM OUT OF STATE.
