Narrative:
It had been a typical sleepless layover--you know, first night in a strange bed after a string of 4-DAYS at home, something you get used to, but you welcome as warmly as your mother-in-law on an extended holiday visit. The preflight and startup had been done smoothly, and professionally. The checklists had been run, but my responses had been a little slow. I was feeling the effects of a restless night. Our taxi clearance was to taxi to runway 17 by the midfield taxiway. The parallel taxiway was closed due to construction. Our flts had been issued this same clearance many times in the past few weeks because of the construction. As we approached runway 17-35 at the midfield point, I cleared left, my first officer cleared right, and we kept on rolling right out onto the runway. About the time our nose wheel entered the runway, I suddenly jumped in my seat and exclaimed my disbelief in my error. About that time ground control called out for us to hold short of the runway until contacting tower. Well, we were already over the falls by then, and it was too late to cover up our error. We switched to tower and apologized for the goof, and luckily they had no one on approach. The tower boys were extremely gracious and tried to dissipate some of my embarrassment by fabricating some tale about the the paint on the taxiway, and the fact that there were no hold or stop signs adjacent to the runway. I appreciated their patronage, but the fact was, I blew it. I was behind the airplane, and we hadn't even left the ground yet.

Title: ACR TAXIED ONTO ACTIVE RWY WITHOUT ATC CLRNC.
Narrative: IT HAD BEEN A TYPICAL SLEEPLESS LAYOVER--YOU KNOW, FIRST NIGHT IN A STRANGE BED AFTER A STRING OF 4-DAYS AT HOME, SOMETHING YOU GET USED TO, BUT YOU WELCOME AS WARMLY AS YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW ON AN EXTENDED HOLIDAY VISIT. THE PREFLT AND STARTUP HAD BEEN DONE SMOOTHLY, AND PROFESSIONALLY. THE CHKLISTS HAD BEEN RUN, BUT MY RESPONSES HAD BEEN A LITTLE SLOW. I WAS FEELING THE EFFECTS OF A RESTLESS NIGHT. OUR TAXI CLRNC WAS TO TAXI TO RWY 17 BY THE MIDFIELD TXWY. THE PARALLEL TXWY WAS CLOSED DUE TO CONSTRUCTION. OUR FLTS HAD BEEN ISSUED THIS SAME CLRNC MANY TIMES IN THE PAST FEW WKS BECAUSE OF THE CONSTRUCTION. AS WE APCHED RWY 17-35 AT THE MIDFIELD POINT, I CLRED LEFT, MY F/O CLRED RIGHT, AND WE KEPT ON ROLLING RIGHT OUT ONTO THE RWY. ABOUT THE TIME OUR NOSE WHEEL ENTERED THE RWY, I SUDDENLY JUMPED IN MY SEAT AND EXCLAIMED MY DISBELIEF IN MY ERROR. ABOUT THAT TIME GND CTL CALLED OUT FOR US TO HOLD SHORT OF THE RWY UNTIL CONTACTING TWR. WELL, WE WERE ALREADY OVER THE FALLS BY THEN, AND IT WAS TOO LATE TO COVER UP OUR ERROR. WE SWITCHED TO TWR AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE GOOF, AND LUCKILY THEY HAD NO ONE ON APCH. THE TWR BOYS WERE EXTREMELY GRACIOUS AND TRIED TO DISSIPATE SOME OF MY EMBARRASSMENT BY FABRICATING SOME TALE ABOUT THE THE PAINT ON THE TXWY, AND THE FACT THAT THERE WERE NO HOLD OR STOP SIGNS ADJACENT TO THE RWY. I APPRECIATED THEIR PATRONAGE, BUT THE FACT WAS, I BLEW IT. I WAS BEHIND THE AIRPLANE, AND WE HADN'T EVEN LEFT THE GND YET.
