Narrative:
Captain's conversation with two jump seat riders resulted in a missed clearance to fly direct to gilro intersection, missing a crossing restriction 25 NM south of sjc VOR by 1000', a missed approach. Although this conversation took place above 10,000', the effect was felt throughout the remainder of the flight.
