Narrative:

Departed cdg for jfk. At a point 30 mi southeast of det the captain heard london tell air carrier B flight to make an immediate turn, then tell us to turn also. I was monitoring the nat track message at the time and did not hear the initial communications. I felt us turn sharply and pitch up. I turned radio #1 back up and heard the captain ask london how close it was. London replied less than 500'. I feel the captain's instant perception of the seriousness of the situation averted a disaster. We feel that the air carrier B jetliner (a widebody transport bnd from rom to lhr) was holding, and either made an error in navigation or was blown into our flight path.
