Narrative:
I was working with a newly minted pilot; who had bought a PA 32R piper lance; on his instrument rating. The plane has all the bells and whistles. We were passing acy enroute to mjx. We were told to stay clear of an active restricted area that is just north of acy. The student was under the hood during this. Due to his inexperience with the plane; GPS; and flying under the hood; my work load was a bit high. He was drifting all over the place and I had to correct his heading several times so we would not bust the restricted area. We were handed off to mcguire approach and were now clear of that restricted area. Mcguire was busy with cargo and tanker planes doing multiple approaches. They had called out traffic at our two o'clock and I mistook a C-17 at our 11 o'clock for the traffic. At one point my student misheard an instruction and started to change the squawk code to VFR and I had to jump in. We were also issued an altitude clearance to maintain at or above 2500. In the midst of this we saw the airport mjx; advised mcguire of airport in sight. We had also drifted off our course to the airport. At this point we started our descent and that is when I saw the tanker approaching from our right. I grabbed the controls and did an immediate descent. The tanker climbed. After we caught our breath and a bit of a scolding from mcguire; we canceled flight following and landed without incident.the main contributing factor was all the distractions/high workload for me.

Title: PA32R instructor pilot reported an NMAC with a military aircraft in the vicinity of WRI airport.
Narrative: I was working with a newly minted pilot; who had bought a PA 32R Piper Lance; on his instrument rating. After we caught our breath and a bit of a scolding from McGuire; we canceled flight following and landed without incident. The main contributing factor was all the distractions/high workload for me.
