Narrative:

After parking at the self-park gate I set the parking brake and shut down engines 1 and 3 then waited for the ground power to be connected. Evidently the parking brake did not set as I noticed we were slowly rolling forward. I applied the brakes to stop the aircraft and checked the parking brake. It was not set. I reset the parking brake and noticed it did not set again this time either. I pulled a little harder and the parking brake set. I spoke to the marshallers and coordinated for a tug to push us back the two feet we had rolled forward. No contact with anything was made; no damage occurred and no one was injured.I usually try to be aware and ensure the parking brake actually sets when applied. I am not sure why I missed it today but I did. I felt the parking brake go into position but I did not ensure that it stayed there.I think my new technique will be to watch the parking brake for a second or two to ensure it actually engages. I just went by feel this time and while I felt it in position it obviously did not hold and slipped off.

Title: MD-11 Captain reported the parking brake did not engage at the gate which allowed the aircraft to roll several feet before movement was detected. Two additional attempts finally locked the brake in position.
