Narrative:
Due to our heavy weight we requested authorization to use runway 14L at ord. We taxied to the 14L hold short line as instructed by the tower and then held our position as instructed. We remained in our position holding short for about 10-15 minutes awaiting takeoff clearance. As we waited, we were instructed to prepare for an immediate departure as the tower was trying to build a slot. We acknowledged that we could accept an immediate takeoff. Tower then instructed us to continue holding short as they would be unable to get us a departure on 14L in a reasonable time. (Aircraft were departing 14L and right, 9L and right.) after a few minutes of waiting, tower called to inform us that takeoff sequencing would be better if we used 14R instead. We told him we could accept 14R. He then said '...turn right and head for the scenic to hangar alley.' since we were holding position at the 14L hold short line, we could only turn right and head down the runway 14L and exit to the runway via the scenic in compliance with his instructions. We followed his directions and cleared final before starting our right turn onto 14L. Just as we exited the runway onto the scenic we heard an aircraft going around. Supplemental information from acn 141235: we heard a pilot announce his intention of executing a go around. I believe that the tower operator, being primarily occupied with the 9 departures, he lost track of our position at the hold line and assumed we were in the run-up pad. This due to the high departure and arrival workload.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR WDB UNAUTHORIZED RWY ENTRY AT ORD.
Narrative: DUE TO OUR HEAVY WEIGHT WE REQUESTED AUTHORIZATION TO USE RWY 14L AT ORD. WE TAXIED TO THE 14L HOLD SHORT LINE AS INSTRUCTED BY THE TWR AND THEN HELD OUR POSITION AS INSTRUCTED. WE REMAINED IN OUR POSITION HOLDING SHORT FOR ABOUT 10-15 MINUTES AWAITING TKOF CLRNC. AS WE WAITED, WE WERE INSTRUCTED TO PREPARE FOR AN IMMEDIATE DEP AS THE TWR WAS TRYING TO BUILD A SLOT. WE ACKNOWLEDGED THAT WE COULD ACCEPT AN IMMEDIATE TKOF. TWR THEN INSTRUCTED US TO CONTINUE HOLDING SHORT AS THEY WOULD BE UNABLE TO GET US A DEP ON 14L IN A REASONABLE TIME. (ACFT WERE DEPARTING 14L AND R, 9L AND R.) AFTER A FEW MINUTES OF WAITING, TWR CALLED TO INFORM US THAT TKOF SEQUENCING WOULD BE BETTER IF WE USED 14R INSTEAD. WE TOLD HIM WE COULD ACCEPT 14R. HE THEN SAID '...TURN RIGHT AND HEAD FOR THE SCENIC TO HANGAR ALLEY.' SINCE WE WERE HOLDING POSITION AT THE 14L HOLD SHORT LINE, WE COULD ONLY TURN RIGHT AND HEAD DOWN THE RWY 14L AND EXIT TO THE RWY VIA THE SCENIC IN COMPLIANCE WITH HIS INSTRUCTIONS. WE FOLLOWED HIS DIRECTIONS AND CLRED FINAL BEFORE STARTING OUR RIGHT TURN ONTO 14L. JUST AS WE EXITED THE RWY ONTO THE SCENIC WE HEARD AN ACFT GOING AROUND. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FROM ACN 141235: WE HEARD A PLT ANNOUNCE HIS INTENTION OF EXECUTING A GO AROUND. I BELIEVE THAT THE TWR OPERATOR, BEING PRIMARILY OCCUPIED WITH THE 9 DEPS, HE LOST TRACK OF OUR POSITION AT THE HOLD LINE AND ASSUMED WE WERE IN THE RUN-UP PAD. THIS DUE TO THE HIGH DEP AND ARR WORKLOAD.
