Narrative:
Being vectored for visibility approach to dtw requested to descent from 12000 to 11000' and slow to 210 KTS. Got distracted and let down to 10300'. I climbed back to 11000' just as the approach control caught the error. He had departures off dtw climbing to 10000'. No other evasive action was required. Never got close to any other aircraft. I just screwed up. Supplemental information from acn 144322: this captain and I flew together for all of 4/90. He has continuously been a distraction by talking so much that he would interfere with my work and cause either a work overload or distraction at inopportune times. Although I have over 20 yrs flying experience with the air force, I'm still on probation with the airline. As a result, new hires often bite their tongues rather than confront capts about cockpit crew management problems, because of the possibility of a negative evaluation being sent to the company, which could effect your being kept on the job beyond probation. My reluctance to work this out caused me to put up with a cockpit environment that was less than satisfactory. It caused me to miss the altitude alert chime and the actual altitude at 11000'.

Title: ACR MLG ALT OVERSHOT IN DESCENT AT DTW.
Narrative: BEING VECTORED FOR VIS APCH TO DTW REQUESTED TO DSNT FROM 12000 TO 11000' AND SLOW TO 210 KTS. GOT DISTRACTED AND LET DOWN TO 10300'. I CLBED BACK TO 11000' JUST AS THE APCH CTL CAUGHT THE ERROR. HE HAD DEPS OFF DTW CLBING TO 10000'. NO OTHER EVASIVE ACTION WAS REQUIRED. NEVER GOT CLOSE TO ANY OTHER ACFT. I JUST SCREWED UP. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 144322: THIS CAPT AND I FLEW TOGETHER FOR ALL OF 4/90. HE HAS CONTINUOUSLY BEEN A DISTR BY TALKING SO MUCH THAT HE WOULD INTERFERE WITH MY WORK AND CAUSE EITHER A WORK OVERLOAD OR DISTR AT INOPPORTUNE TIMES. ALTHOUGH I HAVE OVER 20 YRS FLYING EXPERIENCE WITH THE AIR FORCE, I'M STILL ON PROBATION WITH THE AIRLINE. AS A RESULT, NEW HIRES OFTEN BITE THEIR TONGUES RATHER THAN CONFRONT CAPTS ABOUT COCKPIT CREW MGMNT PROBS, BECAUSE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF A NEGATIVE EVALUATION BEING SENT TO THE COMPANY, WHICH COULD EFFECT YOUR BEING KEPT ON THE JOB BEYOND PROBATION. MY RELUCTANCE TO WORK THIS OUT CAUSED ME TO PUT UP WITH A COCKPIT ENVIRONMENT THAT WAS LESS THAN SATISFACTORY. IT CAUSED ME TO MISS THE ALT ALERT CHIME AND THE ACTUAL ALT AT 11000'.
