Narrative:

We were on an IFR flight plan from pwk to mdw with a further destination of chx. The actual WX wa clear and visibility was excellent. We were being vectored way out of our way over lake michigan and I could see the trip was going to take twice as long as necessary. Since we were only about 10 mi from cgx and were there for a drop-off after mdw, I thought it made more sense to cancel IFR,land at cgx and then go VFR to mdw. We cancelled IFR with approach and called cgx tower. We were told to report the pier (which is about 5 NM north of the field). Cgx is a lake-front airport with a 18/36 runway. We called the reporting point and were cleared to land. Upon rollout and just before turning off the runway, the tower informed us we landed on the wrong runway. We had not checked ATIS and I don't believe the tower gave us winds, but they had been westerly. Now I did notice a slight tailwind on rollout, but no real problem. The winds were 290 degrees, 10 KTS, but 270 degrees about 5 mins later. We should have checked ATIS and/or at least asked for a wind check or confirmed landing runway.

Title: FLT CREW OF GOVT ACFT LANDED WRONG DIRECTION.

Narrative: WE WERE ON AN IFR FLT PLAN FROM PWK TO MDW WITH A FURTHER DEST OF CHX. THE ACTUAL WX WA CLR AND VISIBILITY WAS EXCELLENT. WE CANCELLED IFR WITH APCH AND CALLED CGX TWR. WE WERE TOLD TO RPT THE PIER (WHICH IS ABOUT 5 NM N OF THE FIELD). CGX IS A LAKE-FRONT ARPT WITH A 18/36 RWY. WE CALLED THE RPTING POINT AND WERE CLRED TO LAND. UPON ROLLOUT AND JUST BEFORE TURNING OFF THE RWY, THE TWR INFORMED US WE LANDED ON THE WRONG RWY. WE HAD NOT CHKED ATIS AND I DON'T BELIEVE THE TWR GAVE US WINDS, BUT THEY HAD BEEN WESTERLY. NOW I DID NOTICE A SLIGHT TAILWIND ON ROLLOUT, BUT NO REAL PROB. THE WINDS WERE 290 DEGS, 10 KTS, BUT 270 DEGS ABOUT 5 MINS LATER. WE SHOULD HAVE CHKED ATIS AND/OR AT LEAST ASKED FOR A WIND CHK OR CONFIRMED LNDG RWY.
