Narrative:
I was taxiing out in mia for runway 9R, I was taxiing from the H concourse via the outer taxiway. As I approached runway 12 I announced to the first officer that I was cleared all the way and was crossing runway 12. We cleared both ways and then crossed runway 12. ATC then asked where we were going and stated that we were supposed to be going to runway 9L. The first officer later stated that he knew we were supposed to go to runway 9L, but thought that I knew another way to get there. Runway 12 was not in use at the time. As for my recommendations on how to prevent these kinds of mistakes, I feel this falls entirely under the category of human error. I taxied out as I have done many times in mia and just instinctively headed for runway 9R which is our usual departure runway when departing east. I was well aware that I was crossing runway 12 and took great pains to ensure it was clear. One problem that I do see and feel is a common problem faced by airline operations is how the first officer is loaded up with work while we are taxiing out to the point that he/she can't always pay attention to our taxi procedure. My first officer was busy receiving our weight and balance data via ACARS and loading it into the computer. Had he been more in the loop he might have had time to review his taxi chart and point out that I was going to the wrong runway.

Title: ACR MLG TAXIED TOWARD THE WRONG RWY AT MIA.
Narrative: I WAS TAXIING OUT IN MIA FOR RWY 9R, I WAS TAXIING FROM THE H CONCOURSE VIA THE OUTER TXWY. AS I APCHED RWY 12 I ANNOUNCED TO THE F/O THAT I WAS CLRED ALL THE WAY AND WAS XING RWY 12. WE CLRED BOTH WAYS AND THEN CROSSED RWY 12. ATC THEN ASKED WHERE WE WERE GOING AND STATED THAT WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE GOING TO RWY 9L. THE F/O LATER STATED THAT HE KNEW WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GO TO RWY 9L, BUT THOUGHT THAT I KNEW ANOTHER WAY TO GET THERE. RWY 12 WAS NOT IN USE AT THE TIME. AS FOR MY RECOMMENDATIONS ON HOW TO PREVENT THESE KINDS OF MISTAKES, I FEEL THIS FALLS ENTIRELY UNDER THE CATEGORY OF HUMAN ERROR. I TAXIED OUT AS I HAVE DONE MANY TIMES IN MIA AND JUST INSTINCTIVELY HEADED FOR RWY 9R WHICH IS OUR USUAL DEP RWY WHEN DEPARTING E. I WAS WELL AWARE THAT I WAS XING RWY 12 AND TOOK GREAT PAINS TO ENSURE IT WAS CLR. ONE PROB THAT I DO SEE AND FEEL IS A COMMON PROB FACED BY AIRLINE OPS IS HOW THE F/O IS LOADED UP WITH WORK WHILE WE ARE TAXIING OUT TO THE POINT THAT HE/SHE CAN'T ALWAYS PAY ATTN TO OUR TAXI PROC. MY F/O WAS BUSY RECEIVING OUR WT AND BAL DATA VIA ACARS AND LOADING IT INTO THE COMPUTER. HAD HE BEEN MORE IN THE LOOP HE MIGHT HAVE HAD TIME TO REVIEW HIS TAXI CHART AND POINT OUT THAT I WAS GOING TO THE WRONG RWY.
