Narrative:
B777-200 aircraft was cleared for dispatch from the tower at [gate X]. During pushback the pilot frantically called to stop dispatch. The tower had cleared another aircraft to approach [gate Y]. The dispatcher had to make an abrupt emergency stop of the aircraft. It was such a hard stop that maintenance ran out to the aircraft thinking that they broke a tow bar. The dispatcher was very rattled by this incident but was glad that no damage occurred.
