Narrative:
We had been deviating around thunderstorms and were returning to course when we suddenly encountered severe turbulence for 10-15 second, losing 500 ft of altitude. One radar was on 30 mi the other 60 mi range and maximum gain with only scattered light green return until the last sweep prior to the encounter, when we both observed a faint red return directly on our nose. The seat belt sign was on. The F/as were securing in coach and they and their equipment were tossed around violently. One passenger and one F/a were injured by serving equipment. We were fortunate that none of the serving carts did more damage.
