Narrative:
40 NM north of thunderstorms, we were in cirrus clouds. Without warning we encountered severe turbulence at FL270. Our WX radar was on, and painting the WX to the south of our course. There was frozen rain hitting the windscreen during the turbulence. No aircraft ahead or behind us encountered the turbulence. It lasted no more than 20 seconds. The seat belt sign was on, but the flight attendants were serving. No reported passenger injuries. 1 flight attendant fell to the floor.
