Narrative:
Right main tire blew on takeoff roll, takeoff aborted, aircraft slid off runway. Right main tire and tube replaced, flight completed as originally planned. Preflight did not show any tire problem. After incident, however, line crew informed me the tire looked low, and they had added air to it earlier in the day. Initially, during the takeoff roll, nose wheel shimmy was suspected. Applying elevator up worsened the situation. Power was brought back to idle, directional control was tried to be maintained, and was unsuccessful. Aircraft came to rest half way down the runway in the grass. No further damage. The tire may have been suspected of a possible problem before flight if the line crew had informed me that they had added air to the tire, they could have possibility have told me how low the tire was. The tire had been rotated about 12 hours before incident. The tires total time estimated at 275 hours total.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CORP SMT BLOWS TIRE ON TKOF, ABORTS, AND HAS RWY EXCURSION BEFORE GETTING STOPPED.
Narrative: R MAIN TIRE BLEW ON TKOF ROLL, TKOF ABORTED, ACFT SLID OFF RWY. R MAIN TIRE AND TUBE REPLACED, FLT COMPLETED AS ORIGINALLY PLANNED. PREFLT DID NOT SHOW ANY TIRE PROB. AFTER INCIDENT, HOWEVER, LINE CREW INFORMED ME THE TIRE LOOKED LOW, AND THEY HAD ADDED AIR TO IT EARLIER IN THE DAY. INITIALLY, DURING THE TKOF ROLL, NOSE WHEEL SHIMMY WAS SUSPECTED. APPLYING ELEVATOR UP WORSENED THE SITUATION. PWR WAS BROUGHT BACK TO IDLE, DIRECTIONAL CTL WAS TRIED TO BE MAINTAINED, AND WAS UNSUCCESSFUL. ACFT CAME TO REST HALF WAY DOWN THE RWY IN THE GRASS. NO FURTHER DAMAGE. THE TIRE MAY HAVE BEEN SUSPECTED OF A POSSIBLE PROB BEFORE FLT IF THE LINE CREW HAD INFORMED ME THAT THEY HAD ADDED AIR TO THE TIRE, THEY COULD HAVE POSSIBILITY HAVE TOLD ME HOW LOW THE TIRE WAS. THE TIRE HAD BEEN ROTATED ABOUT 12 HRS BEFORE INCIDENT. THE TIRES TOTAL TIME ESTIMATED AT 275 HRS TOTAL.
