Narrative:
Departing lga runway 13 with whitestone climb. Sat in position/hold several mins. Headings seemed ok. Was aware of possible magnetic deviation notes in airport charts. Was only second lga departure as captain. As we rotated headings went out of sync 20 +/- degree. Turned to 175 degree on my hdi. Copilot attempted to align his rmdi with his hdi causing my hdi to change with headings out of sync. Could not engage autoplt. Was slow in getting left turn in or 040 degree at 3 DME or 1500' as per procedure. Started turn and departure asked heading. Copilot said 175 degree (he had been slowing his rmdi to align with hdi) controller asked what climb we were on . Said whitestone. He said right turn to 340 degrees (maspeth climb). As I was already in left turn and copilot question instructions. Was told to stay in left turn and make it tight to 310 degree (not sure of exact heading given at that point). Things settled down after that. Conclusions: probably sitting in position at end of runway 13 got the flux gate compasses confused. It makes for a messed up departure trying to find wet compass with the mickey mouse mirror system on the medium large transport during a critical phase of flight. And one shouldn't let little problems distract them and become big problems. Supplemental information from acn 151991. We had a misunderstanding of our departure clearance from lga clearance. We thought we were given a lga 3 with a maspeth climb. Departure controller expected us on a whitestone climb.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: HEADING TRACK DEVIATION OCCURS AS MLG FLT CREW IS NOT IN SYNCYH WITH EXPECTED DEP ROUTING AND USE WRONG SID. FLT IS FURTHER COMPLICATED WHEN HDI'S WENT OFF ACTUAL HEADING BY 20 DEGS. FURTHER ACTION BY FO CREATED MORE HEADING DISLOCATION FOR CAPT'S HDI.
Narrative: DEPARTING LGA RWY 13 WITH WHITESTONE CLB. SAT IN POS/HOLD SEVERAL MINS. HDGS SEEMED OK. WAS AWARE OF POSSIBLE MAGNETIC DEV NOTES IN ARPT CHARTS. WAS ONLY SECOND LGA DEP AS CAPT. AS WE ROTATED HDGS WENT OUT OF SYNC 20 +/- DEG. TURNED TO 175 DEG ON MY HDI. COPLT ATTEMPTED TO ALIGN HIS RMDI WITH HIS HDI CAUSING MY HDI TO CHANGE WITH HDGS OUT OF SYNC. COULD NOT ENGAGE AUTOPLT. WAS SLOW IN GETTING L TURN IN OR 040 DEG AT 3 DME OR 1500' AS PER PROC. STARTED TURN AND DEP ASKED HDG. COPLT SAID 175 DEG (HE HAD BEEN SLOWING HIS RMDI TO ALIGN WITH HDI) CTLR ASKED WHAT CLB WE WERE ON . SAID WHITESTONE. HE SAID R TURN TO 340 DEGS (MASPETH CLB). AS I WAS ALREADY IN L TURN AND COPLT QUESTION INSTRUCTIONS. WAS TOLD TO STAY IN L TURN AND MAKE IT TIGHT TO 310 DEG (NOT SURE OF EXACT HDG GIVEN AT THAT POINT). THINGS SETTLED DOWN AFTER THAT. CONCLUSIONS: PROBABLY SITTING IN POS AT END OF RWY 13 GOT THE FLUX GATE COMPASSES CONFUSED. IT MAKES FOR A MESSED UP DEP TRYING TO FIND WET COMPASS WITH THE MICKEY MOUSE MIRROR SYS ON THE MLG DURING A CRITICAL PHASE OF FLT. AND ONE SHOULDN'T LET LITTLE PROBS DISTRACT THEM AND BECOME BIG PROBS. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 151991. WE HAD A MISUNDERSTANDING OF OUR DEP CLRNC FROM LGA CLRNC. WE THOUGHT WE WERE GIVEN A LGA 3 WITH A MASPETH CLB. DEP CTLR EXPECTED US ON A WHITESTONE CLB.
