Narrative:
As we approached 9L mia tower told us to hold short of 9L and I acknowledged the call. The captain continued taxiing toward the runway. It became obvious to me that he was going to cross the hold line (the line is quite a way from the runway). I said, 'you aren't cleared onto the runway,' and the captain responded, 'I'm not going onto the runway.' he taxied up to the runway and stopped. He didn't intrude on the runway. About 30 seconds later mia cleared us for takeoff and added, 'you know you crossed the designated hold line.' I said, 'I'm sorry about that.' he sounded pretty upset, so I'm writing you guys. Problems: the captain told me he was looking at a painted over line he thought was the hold line. He said he was confused by all the lines. Communication: I could have phrased it differently and said, 'you are crossing the hold line--you aren't cleared on the runway.'
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CAPT OF LGT TAXIED PAST HOLD LINE FOR RWY 9L AT MIA.
Narrative: AS WE APCHED 9L MIA TWR TOLD US TO HOLD SHORT OF 9L AND I ACKNOWLEDGED THE CALL. THE CAPT CONTINUED TAXIING TOWARD THE RWY. IT BECAME OBVIOUS TO ME THAT HE WAS GOING TO CROSS THE HOLD LINE (THE LINE IS QUITE A WAY FROM THE RWY). I SAID, 'YOU AREN'T CLRED ONTO THE RWY,' AND THE CAPT RESPONDED, 'I'M NOT GOING ONTO THE RWY.' HE TAXIED UP TO THE RWY AND STOPPED. HE DIDN'T INTRUDE ON THE RWY. ABOUT 30 SECS LATER MIA CLRED US FOR TKOF AND ADDED, 'YOU KNOW YOU CROSSED THE DESIGNATED HOLD LINE.' I SAID, 'I'M SORRY ABOUT THAT.' HE SOUNDED PRETTY UPSET, SO I'M WRITING YOU GUYS. PROBS: THE CAPT TOLD ME HE WAS LOOKING AT A PAINTED OVER LINE HE THOUGHT WAS THE HOLD LINE. HE SAID HE WAS CONFUSED BY ALL THE LINES. COM: I COULD HAVE PHRASED IT DIFFERENTLY AND SAID, 'YOU ARE XING THE HOLD LINE--YOU AREN'T CLRED ON THE RWY.'
