Narrative:
Flying VFR to an uncontrolled 1800' strip in a STOL light twin. Airport located in hilly country, with a hill 500' higher than airport 10 mi away. Previously had flown over to see location. Called FBO the day before for conditions. Told good conditions. It apparently rained during the night. I was unable to contact the FBO when flying overhead on unicom. While in contact with nearby approach control did extended letdown through scattered to broken ceiling. Conditions 7+ mi visibility, 500' scattered to broken. Did letdown and approach at 80-90 mph, landed long due to not recognizing the threshold immediately. Touched down 1/2 way down strip and initiated go around due to poor braking. Aircraft flew briefly and settled into field beyond for an off airport landing. Comment: landing at a grass strip is different than landing on short paved runways. Suggest that emphasis should be in training that grass strips need different preparations and training. I should have done a low pass. I should have broken off the approach and done a go around before touching down. I committed to attempt to salvage a bad landing due to the low ceiling and hills in the area. I should have kept on the brakes and even ground looped if necessary. The aircraft would have stopped on a hard surface.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: PF LIGHT TWIN STOL ACFT LANDS LONG ON SHORT GRASS STRIP AND IS UNABLE TO STOP THE ACFT PRIOR TO DEPARTING THE END OF THE RWY.
Narrative: FLYING VFR TO AN UNCTLED 1800' STRIP IN A STOL LIGHT TWIN. ARPT LOCATED IN HILLY COUNTRY, WITH A HILL 500' HIGHER THAN ARPT 10 MI AWAY. WHILE IN CONTACT WITH NEARBY APCH CTL DID EXTENDED LETDOWN THROUGH SCATTERED TO BROKEN CEILING. CONDITIONS 7+ MI VISIBILITY, 500' SCATTERED TO BROKEN. DID LETDOWN AND APCH AT 80-90 MPH, LANDED LONG DUE TO NOT RECOGNIZING THE THRESHOLD IMMEDIATELY. TOUCHED DOWN 1/2 WAY DOWN STRIP AND INITIATED GAR DUE TO POOR BRAKING. ACFT FLEW BRIEFLY AND SETTLED INTO FIELD BEYOND FOR AN OFF ARPT LNDG. COMMENT: LNDG AT A GRASS STRIP IS DIFFERENT THAN LNDG ON SHORT PAVED RWYS. SUGGEST THAT EMPHASIS SHOULD BE IN TRNING THAT GRASS STRIPS NEED DIFFERENT PREPARATIONS AND TRNING. I SHOULD HAVE DONE A LOW PASS. I SHOULD HAVE BROKEN OFF THE APCH AND DONE A GAR BEFORE TOUCHING DOWN. I COMMITTED TO ATTEMPT TO SALVAGE A BAD LNDG DUE TO THE LOW CEILING AND HILLS IN THE AREA. I SHOULD HAVE KEPT ON THE BRAKES AND EVEN GND LOOPED IF NECESSARY. THE ACFT WOULD HAVE STOPPED ON A HARD SURFACE.
