Narrative:

While being vectored for the approach; coming from the west to the airport. ATC had us descend to 4;400 MSL. The aircraft was about 30 miles from the airport. We were in visual conditions with a 1/4 moon. At 4;400 MSL GPWS call out terrain; followed by terrain pull up. As a crew we executed the max thrust pull up procedure and climbed 1;000 feet to 5;500 MSL. We notified ATC of what occurred. ATC seem surprised to this event. We check the altimeters and all were set correctly to the current ATIS. Mountainous terrain. Dark night. Poor ATC vector.
