Narrative:
I was entering the dvt traffic pattern with inoperative communication (reference aim paragraph 205). From point a, I overflew the traffic pattern by 500' (1500' AGL) and determined that runway S7 were in use by noting the only other aircraft in the pattern on upwind leg). I planned to follow him when he turned downwind, apparently in closed traffic. Starting at point a, I rocked my wings frequently, while flying the path shown, in an attempt to gain the tower's attention. I followed the other aircraft (small aircraft Y) maintaining 1+ mi sep. The small aircraft Y flew the normal right-hand pattern and made a full stop landing. After I turned final, I received a steady green light from the tower and landed. I did not see the small aircraft Z who had been cleared to land on 7R from a left base. He saw me at point B on 3/4 mi final and took evasive action, landing on runway 7L. The following factors may have been involved: distraction of tower operators, relative to their failure to see my aircraft, with only 2 other aft in the air traffic area, until point B. Lack of specific no radio procedure in aim, including light signals. My concentration on the preceding aircraft and tower detracted from normal (wider) scan pattern. Presumption by small aircraft Z pilot who had landing clearance, that no other traffic existed (impaired scan). Color of my aircraft (gray) is difficult to see.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CLOSE PROX 2 GA SMA IN OPPOSITE DIRECTOR TRAFFIC PATTERN INTO DVT.
Narrative: I WAS ENTERING THE DVT TFC PATTERN WITH INOP COM (REF AIM PARAGRAPH 205). FROM POINT A, I OVERFLEW THE TFC PATTERN BY 500' (1500' AGL) AND DETERMINED THAT RWY S7 WERE IN USE BY NOTING THE ONLY OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN ON UPWIND LEG). I PLANNED TO FOLLOW HIM WHEN HE TURNED DOWNWIND, APPARENTLY IN CLOSED TFC. STARTING AT POINT A, I ROCKED MY WINGS FREQUENTLY, WHILE FLYING THE PATH SHOWN, IN AN ATTEMPT TO GAIN THE TWR'S ATTN. I FOLLOWED THE OTHER ACFT (SMA Y) MAINTAINING 1+ MI SEP. THE SMA Y FLEW THE NORMAL RIGHT-HAND PATTERN AND MADE A FULL STOP LNDG. AFTER I TURNED FINAL, I RECEIVED A STEADY GREEN LIGHT FROM THE TWR AND LANDED. I DID NOT SEE THE SMA Z WHO HAD BEEN CLRED TO LAND ON 7R FROM A LEFT BASE. HE SAW ME AT POINT B ON 3/4 MI FINAL AND TOOK EVASIVE ACTION, LNDG ON RWY 7L. THE FOLLOWING FACTORS MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED: DISTR OF TWR OPERATORS, RELATIVE TO THEIR FAILURE TO SEE MY ACFT, WITH ONLY 2 OTHER AFT IN THE ATA, UNTIL POINT B. LACK OF SPECIFIC NO RADIO PROC IN AIM, INCLUDING LIGHT SIGNALS. MY CONCENTRATION ON THE PRECEDING ACFT AND TWR DETRACTED FROM NORMAL (WIDER) SCAN PATTERN. PRESUMPTION BY SMA Z PLT WHO HAD LNDG CLRNC, THAT NO OTHER TFC EXISTED (IMPAIRED SCAN). COLOR OF MY ACFT (GRAY) IS DIFFICULT TO SEE.
