Narrative:
Upon departure from ZZZ; we climbed through an overcast layer and were VFR at 2;000 ft. We then received a traffic advisory (TA) displaying a descending aircraft in front of us. This was followed by a resolution advisory (RA) directing us to descend. We initiated the directed escape maneuver and there was a constant indication that the target aircraft was virtually on top of us. ATC was apprised about the deviation from the SID as we descended towards the ocean; making a left turn while accelerating. ATC advised that they showed no other aircraft in our vicinity. We suspected this was a false indication as the intruder aircraft matched our every move. The transponder selector was switched to 'ALT2' and the RA stopped. We then re-joined the SID. No further RA's took place; however a second TA was displayed and ATC advised that they were not showing any traffic in our immediate vicinity. The transponder selector was then placed to 'XNPDR2' and the TA disappeared. The flight continued without further incident.
