Narrative:
Bwi airport was operating 3 runways at the time (runway 28 departure, runway 33L approach, runway 33R departure and approach). Upon reaching the run-up area for runway 28, we pulled alongside another aircraft to wait out turn for takeoff. There were approximately 5 or 6 aircraft already in the run-up area. Just as we were coming to a stop and set the parking brake, bwi tower asked in a hurried voice if we were ready and first officer acknowledged we were. This is where the confusion over whether we were cleared for takeoff or position and hold occurred. We completed the rest of the before takeoff checklist. I confirmed clear for takeoff with first officer and he agreed. We began our takeoff roll and at approximately 80 KTS a supervisor's voice ordered us to cancel takeoff clearance. We discontinued the takeoff and cleared the runway at echo taxiway prior to the intersection of 33L. Reason for rejected takeoff clearance was due to landing traffic on runway 33L. Taxied back for takeoff. Remainder of flight routine. Bwi tower later informed us we were originally cleared into position only, that takeoff clearance was issued to aircraft on runway 33R. Supplemental information from acn 155129: the captain called for the runway check when we completed and I pointed out to him that we had not completed the before takeoff check. We ran through the before takeoff checklist and started takeoff roll. The local control supervisor (local controller was in training) ordered us to abort takeoff. We found out that we were only cleared into position and hold and a commuter was cleared for takeoff on an additional runway used for commuters. This was found out by reviewing the tapes.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: ACR MLG STARTED TKOF ROLL WITHOUT CLRNC. TWR CALLED ABORT.
Narrative: BWI ARPT WAS OPERATING 3 RWYS AT THE TIME (RWY 28 DEP, RWY 33L APCH, RWY 33R DEP AND APCH). UPON REACHING THE RUN-UP AREA FOR RWY 28, WE PULLED ALONGSIDE ANOTHER ACFT TO WAIT OUT TURN FOR TKOF. THERE WERE APPROX 5 OR 6 ACFT ALREADY IN THE RUN-UP AREA. JUST AS WE WERE COMING TO A STOP AND SET THE PARKING BRAKE, BWI TWR ASKED IN A HURRIED VOICE IF WE WERE READY AND F/O ACKNOWLEDGED WE WERE. THIS IS WHERE THE CONFUSION OVER WHETHER WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF OR POS AND HOLD OCCURRED. WE COMPLETED THE REST OF THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST. I CONFIRMED CLR FOR TKOF WITH F/O AND HE AGREED. WE BEGAN OUR TKOF ROLL AND AT APPROX 80 KTS A SUPVR'S VOICE ORDERED US TO CANCEL TKOF CLRNC. WE DISCONTINUED THE TKOF AND CLRED THE RWY AT ECHO TXWY PRIOR TO THE INTXN OF 33L. REASON FOR REJECTED TKOF CLRNC WAS DUE TO LNDG TFC ON RWY 33L. TAXIED BACK FOR TKOF. REMAINDER OF FLT ROUTINE. BWI TWR LATER INFORMED US WE WERE ORIGINALLY CLRED INTO POS ONLY, THAT TKOF CLRNC WAS ISSUED TO ACFT ON RWY 33R. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 155129: THE CAPT CALLED FOR THE RWY CHK WHEN WE COMPLETED AND I POINTED OUT TO HIM THAT WE HAD NOT COMPLETED THE BEFORE TKOF CHK. WE RAN THROUGH THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST AND STARTED TKOF ROLL. THE LCL CTL SUPVR (LCL CTLR WAS IN TRNING) ORDERED US TO ABORT TKOF. WE FOUND OUT THAT WE WERE ONLY CLRED INTO POS AND HOLD AND A COMMUTER WAS CLRED FOR TKOF ON AN ADDITIONAL RWY USED FOR COMMUTERS. THIS WAS FOUND OUT BY REVIEWING THE TAPES.
