Narrative:

Misunderstood clearance, deviated from SID required heading of 210 degrees to go direct to vny VOR. Was supposed to fly 210 degrees until radar vectors to vny. I turned direct vny too early before receiving vectors. Normally when you switch from tower to departure you are given vectors or heading is reaffirmed. This was not done. It was my first SID departure and I was getting close to the lax TCA. I thought I had misunderstood the clearance and was supposed to go direct to vny VOR. I made a turn and the controller vectored me back to 210 degrees with the admonition to check my SID. I knew the SID, but the problem was lack of familiarity with the area and lack of experience (I only received IFR rating in june). It was a stupid mistake and I am glad the controller caught it. I doubt I'll make it again. I should have requested clarification from departure before turning.

Title: NEWLY INS RATED GA PLT DEPARTING BUR ON SID TURNS DIRECT VNY INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR RADAR VECTORS AS THE SID REQUIRES.

Narrative: MISUNDERSTOOD CLRNC, DEVIATED FROM SID REQUIRED HDG OF 210 DEGS TO GO DIRECT TO VNY VOR. WAS SUPPOSED TO FLY 210 DEGS UNTIL RADAR VECTORS TO VNY. I TURNED DIRECT VNY TOO EARLY BEFORE RECEIVING VECTORS. NORMALLY WHEN YOU SWITCH FROM TWR TO DEP YOU ARE GIVEN VECTORS OR HDG IS REAFFIRMED. THIS WAS NOT DONE. IT WAS MY FIRST SID DEP AND I WAS GETTING CLOSE TO THE LAX TCA. I THOUGHT I HAD MISUNDERSTOOD THE CLRNC AND WAS SUPPOSED TO GO DIRECT TO VNY VOR. I MADE A TURN AND THE CTLR VECTORED ME BACK TO 210 DEGS WITH THE ADMONITION TO CHK MY SID. I KNEW THE SID, BUT THE PROB WAS LACK OF FAMILIARITY WITH THE AREA AND LACK OF EXPERIENCE (I ONLY RECEIVED IFR RATING IN JUNE). IT WAS A STUPID MISTAKE AND I AM GLAD THE CTLR CAUGHT IT. I DOUBT I'LL MAKE IT AGAIN. I SHOULD HAVE REQUESTED CLARIFICATION FROM DEP BEFORE TURNING.
