Narrative:
I'm a pilot for air express. The FAA approved a new call sign for us which is 'shasta'. Since this is so closely sounding to 'alaska' it poses a safety hazard due to the similarity. In a critical situation with a miscom this could cause an accident and I recommend that 'shasta' be changed to another call sign.

Title: REPORTER CONCERNED REGARDING SIMILARITY OF THE AIRLINES SPECIFIED ABREVIATED CALL SIGN TO A MAJOR AIR CARRIER.
Narrative: I'M A PLT FOR AIR EXPRESS. THE FAA APPROVED A NEW CALL SIGN FOR US WHICH IS 'SHASTA'. SINCE THIS IS SO CLOSELY SOUNDING TO 'ALASKA' IT POSES A SAFETY HAZARD DUE TO THE SIMILARITY. IN A CRITICAL SITUATION WITH A MISCOM THIS COULD CAUSE AN ACCIDENT AND I RECOMMEND THAT 'SHASTA' BE CHANGED TO ANOTHER CALL SIGN.
