Narrative:
Nonstop flight from slo to cos. I encountered headwinds with approximately 50 gals left at 20-30 mi from airport. I switched tanks with approximately 3-4 gals left in the right tank. On final the left ran dry and the engine didn't start when I switched to the right(?) tank. A forced landing was made left of runway centerline, about 1000' short of the runway. The tie-down lug on the tail was damaged during run-out when we went through a swail.
