Narrative:
Flight ord-slc 10/90. ATIS reported winds 220 degrees, 23 KTS, gusts 33 KTS. Takeoff runway 32R. Tower reported wind 220 degrees, 25 KTS. Captain of flight chose to depart on runway 32R despite objections of other crew members and possibly exceeding crosswind limitation of 29 KTS. Company provided data did not allow for takeoff on this runway. During takeoff roll (approximately 40 KTS), aircraft suffered at least 2 compressor blade stalls. Takeoff was aborted and aircraft returned to gate for maintenance inspection. Approximately 30 mins later flight continued with a takeoff from runway 22L. Proceeded to slc west/O further incident. Conclusions: PIC chose to takeoff with the potentially out of limits crosswind for the convenience of ord tower. Ord tower's use of runway 32 during this very high wind situation was not the safest available for aircraft departing.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: CROSSWIND TKOF ATTEMPT RESULTED IN COMPRESSOR STALL. TKOF ABORTED. CROSSWIND REPORTED EXCEEDED ALLOWABLE FOR THE LGT PER COMPANY AND FAA LIMITS AND EXCEEDED ATCT FAC POLICY LIMITS.
Narrative: FLT ORD-SLC 10/90. ATIS RPTED WINDS 220 DEGS, 23 KTS, GUSTS 33 KTS. TKOF RWY 32R. TWR RPTED WIND 220 DEGS, 25 KTS. CAPT OF FLT CHOSE TO DEPART ON RWY 32R DESPITE OBJECTIONS OF OTHER CREW MEMBERS AND POSSIBLY EXCEEDING XWIND LIMITATION OF 29 KTS. COMPANY PROVIDED DATA DID NOT ALLOW FOR TKOF ON THIS RWY. DURING TKOF ROLL (APPROX 40 KTS), ACFT SUFFERED AT LEAST 2 COMPRESSOR BLADE STALLS. TKOF WAS ABORTED AND ACFT RETURNED TO GATE FOR MAINT INSPECTION. APPROX 30 MINS LATER FLT CONTINUED WITH A TKOF FROM RWY 22L. PROCEEDED TO SLC W/O FURTHER INCIDENT. CONCLUSIONS: PIC CHOSE TO TKOF WITH THE POTENTIALLY OUT OF LIMITS XWIND FOR THE CONVENIENCE OF ORD TWR. ORD TWR'S USE OF RWY 32 DURING THIS VERY HIGH WIND SITUATION WAS NOT THE SAFEST AVAILABLE FOR ACFT DEPARTING.
