Narrative:
While in a climbing right turn after takeoff, the #1 engine compressor stalled. #1 power lever was retarded immediately. All INS were within limits. A decision was made to reduce power to idle on the #1 engine and declare and emergency and return to slc for a single engine (1 engine in idle) landing, as a precaution. That #1 engine may have suffered internal damage. Landing was normal and #1 engine shut down after clearing runway. While passenger were deplaning 1 passenger told the F/a that he had observed a bird enter the engine and then saw a fireball. Maintenance visually inspected and borescoped engine but found no damage.
