Narrative:

This event occurred when mia tower instructed us to taxi into position and hold runway 12. However our call sign was blocked by another aircraft. Since we were first in line I assumed it was for us and we proceeded to taxi to runway 12. My first officer also read back the instructions to mia tower. Before we were on runway 12 the tower called again an told us to taxi to runway 9L. We responded and stated that we were instructed to taxi to runway 12. The tower replied and said that instruction was for the aircraft behind us. This particular event was not dangerous because we were not on the runway, however we very well could have been. I see the problem areas in this event. One is that it is very important for ATC to listen to readbacks. Had ATC listened to my first officer's readback this would have been prevented. The second problem is for pilots not to assume anything, like I did, in this particular case.
