Narrative:

On departure from ewr the controller gave us a turn direct sparta and cleared us to climb to 14000'. We then switched over to ZNY and checked on climbing to 14000'. ZNY acknowledged. Shortly thereafter ZNY told us to level at 10000' and we were already climbing through 10400'. I immediately began to stop the climb and descended to 10000' when we spotted traffic at our 1 O'clock. ZNY then advised us of the traffic and said he was climbing through 11700'. ZNY then asked us who issued the 14000' clearance and we told him ewr departure control. Other aircraft were climbing and passed well above and ahead of us. We were then issued clearance to climb.
