Narrative:
After receiving the IFR clearance for flight bos-ord, we were advised of a 'wheels up' departure time of xx:48 EST. Prior to gate departure the 'logan 7' SID was briefed for the departure runway 9 (which entailed runway heading to 5000'). After receiving taxi clearance to runway 9 we notified ground control that because of our heavy takeoff weight we needed a longer runway. Runway 4R was assigned. We received clearance to cross runways 9 and 4L, to hold short of runway 4R, and to monitor another tower frequency. Immediately after switching to the new tower frequency, the tower cleared us into 'position and hold 4R, be prepared for an immediate takeoff.' at this time (xx:44 EST) we received revised takeoff data via ACARS(this was 4 mins prior to our edc time of xx:48 EST). The new takeoff data was briefed, the departure SID for runway 4R was reviewed, the before takeoff checklist was completed, and we were cleared for takeoff (takeoff occurred at xx:47 EST). According to the SID for runway 4R heading was to be maintained until reaching the bos VOR 4 DME fix, and then make a right turn to a heading of 090 degree. The problem was that we began our turn prior to the 4 DME fix. At approximately 2 DME departure inquired if tower had given us a heading after takeoff, and then assigned us a 070 degree heading. Between reviewing our revised takeoff data, briefing the departure SID and completing the checklist, we were rushed. Also, when looking at the departure for runway 4R, the instructions for the runway 4R/left departure is printed directly above the term 4 DME. We believe that the way that is printed could easily make one overlook the term 4 DME. After realizing what had happened, we asked departure control if we had caused any problems. They replied 'no', and then came back to tell us to contact boston TRACON upon reaching our destination.

Title: AFTER DEPARTING RWY 4R AT BOS FLT CREW OF LGT TURNED AT 2 MI DME INSTEAD OF PUBLISHED PROC OF TURN AT 4 DME.
Narrative: AFTER RECEIVING THE IFR CLRNC FOR FLT BOS-ORD, WE WERE ADVISED OF A 'WHEELS UP' DEP TIME OF XX:48 EST. PRIOR TO GATE DEP THE 'LOGAN 7' SID WAS BRIEFED FOR THE DEP RWY 9 (WHICH ENTAILED RWY HDG TO 5000'). AFTER RECEIVING TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 9 WE NOTIFIED GND CTL THAT BECAUSE OF OUR HVY TKOF WEIGHT WE NEEDED A LONGER RWY. RWY 4R WAS ASSIGNED. WE RECEIVED CLRNC TO CROSS RWYS 9 AND 4L, TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 4R, AND TO MONITOR ANOTHER TWR FREQ. IMMEDIATELY AFTER SWITCHING TO THE NEW TWR FREQ, THE TWR CLRED US INTO 'POS AND HOLD 4R, BE PREPARED FOR AN IMMEDIATE TKOF.' AT THIS TIME (XX:44 EST) WE RECEIVED REVISED TKOF DATA VIA ACARS(THIS WAS 4 MINS PRIOR TO OUR EDC TIME OF XX:48 EST). THE NEW TKOF DATA WAS BRIEFED, THE DEP SID FOR RWY 4R WAS REVIEWED, THE BEFORE TKOF CHKLIST WAS COMPLETED, AND WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF (TKOF OCCURRED AT XX:47 EST). ACCORDING TO THE SID FOR RWY 4R HDG WAS TO BE MAINTAINED UNTIL REACHING THE BOS VOR 4 DME FIX, AND THEN MAKE A R TURN TO A HDG OF 090 DEG. THE PROB WAS THAT WE BEGAN OUR TURN PRIOR TO THE 4 DME FIX. AT APPROX 2 DME DEP INQUIRED IF TWR HAD GIVEN US A HDG AFTER TKOF, AND THEN ASSIGNED US A 070 DEG HDG. BTWN REVIEWING OUR REVISED TKOF DATA, BRIEFING THE DEP SID AND COMPLETING THE CHKLIST, WE WERE RUSHED. ALSO, WHEN LOOKING AT THE DEP FOR RWY 4R, THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE RWY 4R/L DEP IS PRINTED DIRECTLY ABOVE THE TERM 4 DME. WE BELIEVE THAT THE WAY THAT IS PRINTED COULD EASILY MAKE ONE OVERLOOK THE TERM 4 DME. AFTER REALIZING WHAT HAD HAPPENED, WE ASKED DEP CTL IF WE HAD CAUSED ANY PROBS. THEY REPLIED 'NO', AND THEN CAME BACK TO TELL US TO CONTACT BOSTON TRACON UPON REACHING OUR DEST.
