Narrative:
We were flying the dtw 8 departure. We were cleared to 13000' MSL. Out of 10000', I accelerated to 320 KTS. The departure controller advised us that we needed to maintain 250 KTS for proper sequencing out of dtw. We slowed to 250 KTS and proceeded west/O further comment. We reviewed the SID and saw the note, 'do not exceed 250 KTS until advised.' we completely overlooked the speed restriction. This is the first SID I ever encountered that had this written speed restriction. Usually, one will find them on the arrs (written form). I have had speed restrictions given to me by clearance delivery, but this is a first for me. I realize that the pilot is responsible for all the notes on the SID, but I feel, since speed restrictions on a SID are not normally written (usually given verbally by clearance delivery on departure control), they should be in large print (reference altitude restrictions) or not written on the SID at all.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: NEW SPEED RESTRICTION OF 250 KTS UNTIL ADVISED FOR JET ACFT DEPARTING DTW NOT OBSERVED BY FLT CREW OF LGT.
Narrative: WE WERE FLYING THE DTW 8 DEP. WE WERE CLRED TO 13000' MSL. OUT OF 10000', I ACCELERATED TO 320 KTS. THE DEP CTLR ADVISED US THAT WE NEEDED TO MAINTAIN 250 KTS FOR PROPER SEQUENCING OUT OF DTW. WE SLOWED TO 250 KTS AND PROCEEDED W/O FURTHER COMMENT. WE REVIEWED THE SID AND SAW THE NOTE, 'DO NOT EXCEED 250 KTS UNTIL ADVISED.' WE COMPLETELY OVERLOOKED THE SPD RESTRICTION. THIS IS THE FIRST SID I EVER ENCOUNTERED THAT HAD THIS WRITTEN SPD RESTRICTION. USUALLY, ONE WILL FIND THEM ON THE ARRS (WRITTEN FORM). I HAVE HAD SPD RESTRICTIONS GIVEN TO ME BY CLRNC DELIVERY, BUT THIS IS A FIRST FOR ME. I REALIZE THAT THE PLT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL THE NOTES ON THE SID, BUT I FEEL, SINCE SPD RESTRICTIONS ON A SID ARE NOT NORMALLY WRITTEN (USUALLY GIVEN VERBALLY BY CLRNC DELIVERY ON DEP CTL), THEY SHOULD BE IN LARGE PRINT (REF ALT RESTRICTIONS) OR NOT WRITTEN ON THE SID AT ALL.
