Narrative:
WX en route and in the terminal area resulted in an approach from the west (blond 1) instead of the north (darbs 1). This resulted in several extra turns near the airport to line up with the landing runways, so I was a little busier with the turns and looking for the airport. The initial approach controller told us to expect an approach to runway 18R. This 'expect' call plus recent flts into tampa with construction on runway 18L had us all thinking runway 18R. The final controller apparently cleared us for runway 18L. We had the ILS set up for runway 18R, were expecting runway 18R, and the captain read back 'cleared for runway 18R.' I headed for runway 18R. The tower cleared us to land on runway 18R. On landing roll, the tower advised us to contact the approach controller about a little problem with our approach. We were all wearing headsets, but heard what we expected instead of what was really coming over the headset.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: APCH TO THE WRONG RWY.
Narrative: WX ENRTE AND IN THE TERMINAL AREA RESULTED IN AN APCH FROM THE W (BLOND 1) INSTEAD OF THE N (DARBS 1). THIS RESULTED IN SEVERAL EXTRA TURNS NEAR THE ARPT TO LINE UP WITH THE LNDG RWYS, SO I WAS A LITTLE BUSIER WITH THE TURNS AND LOOKING FOR THE ARPT. THE INITIAL APCH CTLR TOLD US TO EXPECT AN APCH TO RWY 18R. THIS 'EXPECT' CALL PLUS RECENT FLTS INTO TAMPA WITH CONSTRUCTION ON RWY 18L HAD US ALL THINKING RWY 18R. THE FINAL CTLR APPARENTLY CLRED US FOR RWY 18L. WE HAD THE ILS SET UP FOR RWY 18R, WERE EXPECTING RWY 18R, AND THE CAPT READ BACK 'CLRED FOR RWY 18R.' I HEADED FOR RWY 18R. THE TWR CLRED US TO LAND ON RWY 18R. ON LNDG ROLL, THE TWR ADVISED US TO CONTACT THE APCH CTLR ABOUT A LITTLE PROB WITH OUR APCH. WE WERE ALL WEARING HEADSETS, BUT HEARD WHAT WE EXPECTED INSTEAD OF WHAT WAS REALLY COMING OVER THE HEADSET.
