Narrative:

Nov, 1990, flying captain on airlines flight iah to lga climbing through FL300 for FL330 assigned #2 engine EPR began fluctuating followed by severe compressor stalls and engine vibration. I reduced power on #2 engine and engine began to stabilize. I told the first officer to advise houston center that we were returning to iah houston. Center cleared us to sbi VOR and cleared us to FL240. The first officer asked for direct to iah and told center that we were declaring an emergency. Center acknowledged and cleared us direct iah. We returned to iah (approximately 130 NM) with no further incidents.

THE F/O ASKED FOR DIRECT TO IAH AND TOLD CTR THAT WE WERE DECLARING AN EMER. CTR ACKNOWLEDGED AND CLRED US DIRECT IAH. WE RETURNED TO IAH (APPROX 130 NM) WITH NO FURTHER INCIDENTS.
