Narrative:
During climbout on the zzzzz departure out of ZZZ; climbing through FL350 for FL450; 40-50 NM northwest of ZZZ; going direct to ZZZZZ1; we had a FMS single operation mode message on the right FMS and the left FMS display went blank followed by the du 1 display going blank; followed by batt 1 'over current' message and the autopilot disengaging. The left side electrically isolated automatically with the crosstie open. Then many EICAS messages posted all at once; including 'a' rudder limiter fail and du 1 fail. I asked the sic (second in command) to take the radios as well as the pilot flying job and I started looking into the battery 1 over current procedures as that seemed to be the most serious of the many messages. As I started into the procedures I selected emergency bus on the left side and we immediately smelled a heavy electrical burning smell without seeing any smoke; so I deselected the emergency bus and turned off batt 1; as I noticed that batt 1 was discharging at -199 amps. With the possibility of an onboard fire; the sic and I agreed we needed to [request priority handling] and that ZZZ was our closest divert field. Center then turned us toward ZZZ and gave us a descent. After turning off batt 1 the burning oder started to lessen. I told the passengers that we that we were experiencing an electrical issue and that we were diverting to ZZZ. We got the field in sight and were cleared to land on runway xxl. Gear; flaps and slats and thrust reverser appeared to work normally; however the anti-skid was inoperative. The fire captain checked over the aircraft after we cleared the runway and report no fire observed. I left the aircraft and verified that the number 1 battery compartment looked normal and the battery was cool to the touch. Taxied the aircraft to the FBO (fixed based operator) with fire trucks following. Shut down the aircraft normally and moved the passengers into the FBO. When I opened the baggage compartment to retrieve the passengers luggage; both the sic and I noticed an extremely heavy burnt electrical smell coming from the baggage compartment. Fire crew inspected the aircraft inside and out and said no fire was seen. Contacted operations and maintenance.an electrical short on one of the electrical buses.
