Narrative:
On climb out from pns, departure issued a climb clearance to 12000'. As PF, I read back the altitude to the captain to confirm in the cockpit the altitude we were assigned. He also read back '12000' to departure control, which departure rogered. Leveling off at 12000' over the navy whiting TACAN, departure called to ask our altitude, to which we responded, '12000 assigned.' departure responded that 10000' was assigned and that there was no conflict. We also told him that he rogered our readback of 12000'. He replied that there was no conflict and handed us off to ZJX. An altitude assignment of '1-0, 10, thousand,' or '1-2, 12, thousand' would have prevented this incident.
