Narrative:
Upon landing in key west, fl, after an IFR trip to nassau, bahamas it was brought to my attention that the permanent registration card was not yet received from the FAA and only the temporary pink slip registration was on board. I would never have made the trip had I known this was a violation of a far. When we had purchased the aircraft in august, the dealer took responsibility for bringing the paperwork update, including painting the aircraft and changing the north number from abc to xyz. Apparently the registration change had not been received by the FAA which was sent by us 11/90 from the GADO office at dupage airport in il. This was sent by my brother and his flight instrument and included change of north number application (a copy of this application west a in the airplane). When we found out in key west that everything was not in order, we tried to contact the FAA which was closed for the weekend. (Friday at 6:00 local). Our plan was to return to nassau the next day, however, due to the offices being closed, we could not return until the problem is straightened out. We plan to completely correct the problem with the FAA.
